KENDRICK LAMAR GEARS UP TO RELEASE HIS FIFTH STUDIO ALBUM
For Kendrick Lamar fans, patience has been their best friend over the last five years, as they’ve been thirsting and begging for an album since the release of his last album, DAMN, in 2017 which won him five Grammy awards. While Lamar hasn’t released any solo project since then, he’s featured in a number of great projects, including tracks with Busta Rhymes, 2 Chains, Raphael, Beyoncé,Baby Keem and Saadiq.
Kendrick Lamar a.k.a K.dot, Kung Fu Kenny or Oklama is an American rapper, singer, songwriter and producer from Compton, California. In addition to his solo career, he is a member of the hip-hop super group, Black Hippy, a group of four with other member being Ab-soul, Jay Rock and Schoolboy Q. Lamar made his mainstream debut in 2012 with Good kid, M.A.A.D city which went on to be certified triple platinum and has been regarded as one of the greatest rappers of all time. One of his greatest skills is his storytelling, the ability to articulate his everyday past and present experiences. He as received many awards as well as nominations in his career, including 14 Grammy awards, two AMA awards, six Billboard music awards, a Brit award and a Pulitzer Prize.
In 2017, he released his fourth studio album, DAMN, the first non-classical and non-jazz album to be awarded a Pulitzer Prize for Music. DAMN is a 14-track LP which strikes as rhythmically dynamic and highly authentic while capturing the complexities of modern African-american lifestyle. The lead single on the album, “Humble” topped the billboard. The song is also said to be the most successful song of Kendrick Lamar’s career so far. DAMN is the last solo project put out by the rapper till date.
While he was taking a break from his solo career, he also took a break from social media which made fans even more baffled by the rapper’s hesitation to put out new personal project. In the past five years, Kendrick Lamar has not been inactive. In 2018, wrote and produced the soundtrack of the marvel superhero film, black panther. In 2021, Lamar was featured on Baby Keem’s “Family Ties”, one of the tracks on his album “The Melodic Blue”. Keem, who is rumored to be Kendrick’s cousin, on the track, showed appreciation to K.dot for the opportunities he’s given him in the music industry. The track “Family Ties” recently won the Grammy for Best Rap Performance. While Kendrick busied himself with non-personal projects, fans kept expecting a follow-up album to DAMN but none came.
What came, though, five years later, was hope for all Kendrick Lamar fans as he announced the release of his fifth studio album on the 18th of April 2022 letting them know the wait is almost over. The rapper shared the news on Instagram in a letter under his moniker, Oklama, and shared on letterhead for company pgLang.
